Gruber Ewald

The estate is located in the municipality of Röschitz in the west of the Lower Austrian wine region Weinviertel, It has been family-owned since 1724. Today it is owned by Ewald Gruber sen. managed (manager & vineyard maintenance). The three sons also work in the company. Ewald jun. is responsible for the cellar after training in Klosterneuburg and practical experience in Australia and New Zealand. Johann is responsible for Marketing & Quality Management and Christian for Weingartenpflege & Controlling. Maria Gruber is managing director of the "Weinquartier" in Retz (largest regional vinotheque in Austria). The Heuriger “Zum Gruber” is connected. A historic attraction is the "Weber-Keller" with a 200-year-old tree press and sculptures from the history of wine on the cellar walls. The vineyards cover 68 hectares of vineyards in, for example, the Röschitzer Rieden Hinterholz, Hundspoint, Königsberg and Reipersberg. 55 of these are located around Röschitz (Stammgut), the rest in Straning / Limberg and Maissau. They are planted 70% with the white varieties Grüner Veltliner (main variety with 50%), Riesling, Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, and 30% with the red varieties Zweigelt, Blauburger, Pinot Noir, Blauer Portugieser and St. Laurent. Grapes are also purchased on a large scale.

It is consistently natural viticulture with for example green manure, gentle tillage, no need herbicides and promotion of beneficials practiced by appropriate plants and trees on the edge of the vineyards. The wines are vinified and marketed in the three lines "Retzer Weinberge", "Classic" and the top line "Selection". Premium wines include, for example Weinviertel DAC (Grüner Veltliner), Grüner Veltliner Hundspoint and the red wine cuvée Royale (Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon). If the weather is suitable, ice wine is also produced. The product range also includes a frizzante (sparkling wine). Since the 2006 vintage, in cooperation with the wine expert Josef M. Schuster, white wines from Grüner Veltliner from seven hectares of vineyards have been produced in Maissau under the "Schloss Maissau" brand. And since 2008, the wines of the “Stift Altenburg” in Limberg have been produced together with Father Michael. Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, Zweigelt and Merlot are grown there on six hectares.
