Guttation

Name (lat. drop) for the excretion of excess water in plants and fungi by osmotic pressure via the hydathodes (leaf openings) on the leaf teeth or leaf tips. These are special variants of stomata (stomata ). The phenomenon occurs when there is an abundant water supply and high humidity, when transpiration (evaporation) is only possible to a limited extent or not at all. However, the resulting drops should not be confused with dew, which has a similar appearance. See also under Vine.
