The name derived from the French "Gouais" or Germanized designates a white wine from the Swiss canton Wallis from the grape variety Gouais Blanc (White Heunisch) is pressed (Gwäss is also a synonym for this grape variety). The acidic, rustic tasting white wine mainly serves as a blend or as a simple thirst quencher. Due to the high acid content, the vine used to be exposed on the edge of vineyards to prevent people from stealing the grapes.
