single vineyard in the municipality of Monzingen in the German wine-growing region of Nahe. The name is derived from the steep, bare hillside location. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) already praised a "Monzinger" in 1815. Although he did not mention a location, Halenberg is considered the best location in the municipality. The south to south-west facing vineyard at 160 to 240 metres above sea level with a slope of 25 to 70% covers eight hectares of vines. The easily warmed soil consists of a conglomerate of blue-grey slate with quartzite and pebbles, in the flatter part with admixtures of clay and on the steep slope with lots of gravel and sand.
The cold downdraughts at night are diverted by a hill above the vineyard. The small vineyard Auf der Ley, which is defined as a cadastral site, is also located here, a small part of which extends into the neighbouring single vineyard Frühlingsplätzchen. Only the Riesling variety is cultivated here. The special climate favours the production of noble sweet wines. The Alt Eckhard & Holger, Emrich-Schönleber, Schäfer-Fröhlich and Schauß Erich wineries, for example, have shares in the vineyard.
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
