Hamster wine

Common name in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany). This is the name given to the wines that were exchanged for winemakers 'and farmers' groceries for mostly foods such as potatoes or meat after the Second World War (1939-1945). Mixed drinks made from boiled water, tea (fennel, chamomile) and glucose are also referred to as hamster wine. See also under special wines,
