Hanns

The white grape variety originates from Austria. Synonyms are Abendroth, Abendröte, Blauer Hans, Blue John, Falscher Frühroter, Falscher Frühroter Veltliner, Fleischtraube, Hans, Hansen, Hannsen, Hannsen Weiß, Kleiner Roter Veltliner, Kleiner Veltliner, Roter Hansen, Roter Mährer, Roter Riesling, Rother Riesling, Roter Zierfahndler, Roter Zierfandler, Rotraifler, Schwabenhans, Weißer Hanns and Weißer Hannsen. See also a list of all Veltliner varieties under the name group Veltliner. The parentage is unknown. The historical Hansen wine from Plochingen near Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg), which is often wrongly cited as an example of Hanns cultivation, is not the Hanns grape variety, but (along with Dornfelder, Kerner, Riesling and Trollinger) Grüner Veltliner. The Hanns variety is no longer cultivated commercially. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
