Hans Day

Hans day (GB)
Name in common use in Austria for 27 December. During the holy mass the new wine is consecrated to St. John (Jesus' favourite disciple). According to tradition, the apostle was presented with wine poisoned by his enemies. John blessed it and the poison escaped in the form of a snake. Through the custom, the wine is spared from evil and sacrilege. There is another name day of a saint with a reference to wine - Martini is baptized with wine on 11 November.
