Happenbach

The red grape variety (also table grape Happenbach) was long regarded as a new cross between Trollinger (Schiava Grossa) x Silvaner; it was named after the town of the same name in Württemberg in Germany. The cross was made in the early 1930s at the Weinsberg Wine Institute. The father variety was allegedly a selection of Roter Silvaner (a red-berried variety of Silvaner) made by Gustav Adolf Froelich (1847-1912). In the 2010s, DNA analyses at the Geilweilerhof (Julius Kühn Institute) determined that it is a "purebred" variety of Trollinger (Schiava Grossa). It was formerly used as table grape.
