See under Bio Austria.

The organic movement in Austria began in 1927 with the first pioneer farms in Carinthia. The first association was ORBI in 1959. Until the 1980s, the pioneers of the organic movement also saw themselves as an alternative to the capitalist social order. The social ideas of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), one of the initiators of the organic movement and later with the DEMETER brand of biodynamic viticulture, were of great importance. The first organic association in Austria was ORBI, founded in 1959. At the beginning of the 1990s there was a real boom, with which marketing became more and more important. As a result, organic became interesting for a broad mass of farmers and consumers and was also discovered by the trade. A number of successful organic trade brands emerged, such as "Ja! Natürlich" (Billa, Billa-Plus), "Natur pur" (Spar) and "Natur aktiv" (Hofer in Austria, Aldi in Germany).
