The Polynesian island chain in the northern Pacific with the main island of the same name (also called Big Island) was a US federal territory from 1898 and became the 50th state of the USA in 1959. There are eight main islands (see map), the capital Honolulu is on the island of Oahu. The total area is 28,311 km². Viticulture hardly plays a role. Fruit wine is produced from various tropical fruits, but mainly from pineapple. The largest producer is Volcano Winery, but it does not produce real wine from grapes. On the second largest island, Maui, the "Tedeschi Vineyard and Winery" was founded in Ulupalukua in 1974 by winemaker Emil Tedeschi from California's Napa Valley. There, the pineapple wine "Maui Blanc", the pineapple sparkling wine "Maui Sparkling", a rosé c uvée from the Carnelian and Chenin Blanc varieties, as well as the red wines "Ulupalakua" and "Plantation" from the Carnelian variety are produced. Every year in November, Hawaii hosts the "Annual Winter Wine Escape" event with 50 producers from all over the world.
