Heerkretz

single vineyard in the two municipalities of Neu-Bamberg and Siefersheim ( Bingen area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. The name refers to the arduous workability of the soil, as "Kretz" is derived from "Kratzen" (to hoe, dig around). The part "Heer" comes from an old military road in the valley at the foot of the site. The south and south-east facing vineyards at 160 to 280 metres above sea level with a slope of 20 to 60% cover 56 hectares of vines. The soils, which vary somewhat due to their enormous size, consist of quartz porphyry, porphyry weathering and consolidated marine sand with thick shell limestone deposits, partly fine earth and loam, as well as primary rock and Rotliegend in the subsoil. The very rugged vineyard slope with many basins is well protected from cold easterly and westerly winds. Springs rise at the foot of the site, providing a favourable water balance for the vines. The white wine varieties Riesling and Silvaner, as well as the red wine variety Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are mainly cultivated here. The Marković, Steitz Christian and Wagner-Stempel wineries, for example, have shares in the site.
