The international Swiss company Hess Family Estates AG (formerly Hess Group AG), headquartered in Köniz (Canton of Bern), is active in the production and sale of wine, in the catering trade and in the real estate business. The origin dates back to 1844, when the beer brewery Steinhölzli was founded in Kirchberg by Johann Heinrich Hess. The company was taken over from the year 1957 in the fourth generation by Donald M. Hess (* 1936), who in 1960 opened the Valser St. Petersquelle and introduced the mineral water brand Valser. The brewery was sold in 1968 and built in 1978 as a new second leg, in addition to the mineral water, an international wine business. Since the sale of the Valser Mineralquellen in 2002, the Hess Family Estates AG focuses on the areas of wine, gastronomy and real estate and now owns eight wineries on four continents and numerous restaurants. The property includes or counted among others the 2001 acquired Colomé (Salta, Argentina) as well Glen Carlou (Paarl, South Africa), Peter Lehmann (Barossa Valley, Australia) and The Hess Collection Winery (Napa Valley, California).
