Hessian mountain road

The cultivation area lies in Hessen in Germany between the rivers Neckar, Rhine and Main in the protection of the Odenwald on the western slope of the Odenwald. The vineyards cover 467 hectares of vineyards along the Rhine. Already the Romans operated here viticulture and laid the "Via strata montana" (mountain road). The first documentary mention was made in 755 regarding the donation of a vineyard in Heppenheim.

Climate and soil

The mild climate Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) called out on his return from the coronation in Frankfurt to the exclamation: Here begins Germany, to become Italy . Due to early spring and late autumn, there is a relatively long growing season with the best sunshine and enough rainfall, This results in optimal conditions for viticulture. The main wine communities are Heppenheim and Bensheim with mainly loess clay soils. Buntsandstein is only available on two small "islands" (Heppenheimer Steinkopf and Maiberg). Only in the northern area (eg Zwingenburg) are occasional granite weathering soils.

There are 440 farms, of which around 150 cultivate only up to one hectare. Around 260 of them deliver their grapes to the twowinegrowers Vinum autmundis und Vinum autmundis and Bergsträßer winegrower with almost 60% of the total area. Worth mentioning is the 2015 inaugurated VINIVERSUM with the adventure trail "Wine and stone". Other producers are Hessian state vineyards . H. Freiberger and Simon-Bürkle .
