Hipping

single vineyard in the municipality of Nierstein (Nierstein area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. It is located between Brudersberg and Ölberg and is part of the so-called "Red Slope" within the Rhine front. There are a few versions about the meaning of the name, as there were different spellings in the past such as Hüppingen, Hoppeling, Huppbuhl and Hüttebühl. According to the most common reading, the name could derive from the Middle High German "Hübel" for "hill" or from "Hippe" for "goat" (which may have once grazed here), but there are a number of other interpretations. The southeast-facing vineyards at 90 to 160 metres above sea level with slopes of up to 70% cover 23 hectares of vines. The soils consist of red clay slate (Rotliegendes) with a low soil layer and a limestone subsoil. Here, mainly Riesling and some Pinot Blanc are cultivated. Shares in the site are held, for example, by the Bunn Lisa, Evangelical Church of Hesse and Nassau, Gehring Theo, Gunderloch, Heyl zu Herrnsheim, Keller Klaus, Kühling-Gillot, Louis Guntrum, Manz Erich, Schätzel Kai, Schneider Georg Albrecht, Seebrich, St. Antony and Strub Walter wineries.
