Frequent vineyard name (also Hochacker) in Austria. The name does not, as one might assume, indicate a higher location that stands out from the surroundings. Rather, it refers to farmland or vineyards with "high yields". In addition to the ones listed below, there is another vineyard of this name in Gols.
The vineyards cover about 100 hectares on mostly heavy loam and loess soils with some gravel and in the lower areas alluvial humus. The vine rows are mostly laid out in a north-south direction. Here, mainly the red wine varieties Blaufränkisch (80%), Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are cultivated. Cabernet Sauvignon is cultivated in the small sub-vineyard "Hasler". Shares in the vineyard are held, for example, by the wineries Bauer-Pöltl, Gesellmann Albert, Iby Anton, Iby-Lehrner, Kerschbaum Maria, Kerschbaum Paul, Lehrner Paul, Moritz Alfred, vintners of the cooperative Vereinte Winzer Blaufränkischland and Weninger Franz.
The south to west facing vineyard at 300 to 370 metres above sea level has a slope of 30 to 45°. The soil consists of an iron-rich, well-weathered gneiss with granite in the subsoil. The Riesling and Gelber Muskateller varieties are grown here. Above the terraces, the vineyard turns into a flat area where loess predominates. Chardonnay, Muskateller, Merlot and above all Grüner Veltliner are grown here. The wineries Nigl Martin and Proidl Franz, for example, have shares in the vineyard.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
