The German wine expert Marcus "Sam" Hofschuster (* 1968) is one of the most renowned today wine critics Germany and Europe. At the end of the 1980s, his passion for German wine was awakened. During his time as wine dealer he was already a committed sponsor of top German plants. That was when the idea of a comprehensive guide to the best German crops came up (back then online and in book form, now only online). Other countries gradually followed. Today, Marcus Hofschuster and his colleagues taste and evaluate wines every day. From the beginning, this was done exclusively in the form of blind tastings in the tasting room of Wein-Plus in Erlangen (Middle Franconia).
No results of tastings at producers or at events are published as long as they are not rarity samples. All wines provided by the producers are made according to a strictly designed 100-point system graded ( wine review ) and described in detail in the form of tasting notes ( wine address ). For the purpose of reviewing the evaluations and determining the development, they are also carried out regularly again tastings, The results have been available on the Wein-Plus website since 1999 immediately after the tasting. So that counts wine guide among the most up-to-date worldwide. By the end of 2016, over 110,000 wines from over 6,000 producers had been tasted and described, all of which are still included in the Wein-Plus archive.
