The Bernhard Huber winery is located in the municipality of Malterdingen (Breisgau area) in the German wine-growing region of Baden. Until 1987, the estate was a member of a cooperative, from then on the wines were marketed by the estate itself. In the 14th century, Cistercian monks brought Pinot Noir (Malterdinger) to Malterdingen. The monks' estate (called "curia") was located in the Gewann Mönchhofmatten, where the winery is today. After Bernhard Huber's untimely death in June 2014, his son Julian Huber took over the reins of the vineyards and cellar while he was still studying oenology and ran the business together with his mother Barbara Huber and a dedicated team.

Huber Bernhard - Gewann Wildensteen in Einzellage Bienenberg

The vineyards cover 28 hectares in the single vineyard sites Bienenberg (Malterdingen), Schlossberg (Hecklingen), Sommerhalde (Bombach) and Alte Burg (Köndringen). They are 70% planted with Pinot Noir, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay (15%), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Freisamer and some Muskateller and Müller-Thurgau. Important quality parameters are the age of the vines, a low vine load through dense planting and healthy grapes. During vinification, great importance is attached to the taste maturity of the wines and the careful elaboration of the typicalities of the vineyards. The gentle processing in the cellar with as little movement as possible makes use of gravity through downward pressure. The wines are consistently vinified dry and stored for a long time on the fine lees.

A three-week spontaneous maceration and self-clarification is practised for the wines. The best red wines mature for 16 to 18 months in used French barrique barrels. All Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are bottled without filtration. Premium wines are the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays "Alte Reben" and "Grosse Gewächse". Another speciality is the white wine cuvée "Malterer", which is blended from Pinot Blanc and Freisamer. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced, which are kept on the yeast for up to seven years. About 160,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) and the German Barrique Forum.
