Huxel Fritz

The German winery and vineyard owner Fritz Huxel (1892-1972) came from a Huguenot branch of a Burgundian earl sex. His father Friedrich had been a wine merchant. From the 1950s, Fritz Huxel dealt in his vineyard in Westhofen (Wonnegau, Rheinhessen) in numerous trials with the examination of new grape varieties. In close cooperation with the State Institute for Vine Breeding in Alzey (Rheinhessen), he recognized the potential of Georg Shy (1879-1949) created a new breed with the breeding number "Alzey S 3962". He strove to spread and won numerous national and international awards and prizes. In his honor, variety got the name Huxelrebe,
