Huxel Fritz

The German winery and vine school owner Fritz Huxel (1892-1972) came from a Huguenot branch of a Burgundian count family. His father Friedrich had been a wine merchant. From the 1950s, Fritz Huxel carried out numerous tests on his vineyard in Westhofen (Wonnegau, Rheinhessen) with the testing of new grape varieties. In close cooperation with the State Institute for Vine Breeding in Alzey (Rheinhessen), he recognized the potential of one of Georg Shy (1879-1949) created new varieties with the breeding number "Alzey S 3962". He endeavored to disseminate the wine and won numerous national and international prizes and awards with it. Sorte was named in his honor Huxelrebe,
