Ice day

ice day (GB)

Meteorological term for a day with permafrost on which the air temperature never rises above zero °Celsius for the entire 24 hours. An ice day is also always counted as a frost day. The number of frost days for a period, for example for a month, a winter or even an entire year, is a good parameter for the severity of this period. This makes it easy to compare the winters of different years or the climate of different regions in one period. The grapes for an ice wine are harvested on such cold days with temperatures of at least 7 °Celsius. See also under Viticultural suitability.
