In 2001 the European Commission approved Canadian "Icewine" under the English name for the EU market. The name is protected on the European market and may only be used for this dessert wine. The Eiswein
from Germany and Austria as well as the relevant German designation are also protected. Prerequisite for the admission of the Canadian ice wine to the European market was the decision of Canada in the summer of 2000 to introduce uniform standards for the production of ice wine. Before had Germany
agreed on such a standard. At the same time, this opened the German and Austrian ice wine producers access to the Canadian market.
