IGGP

Abbreviation for "International Grape Genome Program", an international collaboration on grapevine research with a focus on genome research. There are research centres in Australia (here CSIRO is involved), Chile, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, South Africa and the USA. An important prerequisite was the determination of the genome sequence of the grapevine. The main goals of the project are to improve yield and quality in grape production through genetic modifications in the genome. This involves, among other things, introducing foreign genes with a desirable trait, such as resistance to fungi, viruses or insect pests, into the genetic stock of grape varieties without, however, altering the other genes or traits characteristic of that variety. These techniques are controversial and the discussions about them are very emotional. See also DNA and molecular genetics.
