Abbreviation for a wine quality level within the EU, which became valid in 2009. This second level in the quality pyramid after the quality wine corresponds to the former country wine. In Germany and Austria the corresponding designation is wine g.g.A. (protected geographical indication). The new designation or abbreviation IGP is used in four countries

  • France: Indication Géographique Protégée (formerly Vin de pays)
  • Italy: Indicazione Geografica Protetta (formerly IGT = Indicazione Geografica Tipica)
  • Portugal: Indicação Geográfica Protegida (formerly VR = Vinho Regional)
  • Spain: Indicación Geográfica Protegida (formerly VdlT = Vino de la Tierra)

However, the old designations are still permitted as traditional terms in many EU countries. For more details, see the individual countries and the comprehensive information under Quality System.
