The state with the capital Springfield is in the central north of the United States and borders in the northeast on Lake Michigan. In 1818, it was included as the 21st state in the group of states. Illinois is one of the most important agricultural states in the United States. The famous Californian wine pioneer Joseph "Joe" Heitz (1919-2000) was born here. Shawnee Hills was classified as the first and so far only AVA area in 2007. There are around 20 producers, well known are Fox Creek Vineyards, Glunz Family Winery & Cellars, Lynfred Winery, Mary Michelle Winery, Piasa Winery, Schorr Lake Vineyards and Waterloo Winery.
