The largest are Bali with 5,780 km², Kalimantan (Borneo) with 751,936 km², Java with 126,700 km², Sulawesi (Celebes) with 189,216 km², Sumatra with 473,481 km², Timor with 87,700 km² (East Timor is an independent state) and West New Guinea (formerly Irian Jaya) with 421,981 km² (the eastern half is a separate state as Papua New Guinea).

Indonesien - Landkarte, Flagge, Wappen

Most of Indonesia is part of Asia, but the part of the country on New Guinea belongs to the Australian continent. Indonesia borders Malaysia on Borneo, Papua New Guinea on New Guinea and East Timor on Timor. The former Dutch colony gained independence after the Indonesian War of Independence in 1949.

Indonesien - Inselgruppe mit Bali

The islands lie in the tropical monsoon climate. Viticulture is only practised on the northern tip of Bali with the capital Denpasar. The hillside vineyards near the town of Singaraja are somewhat protected from the high humidity and tropical heat. The only producer there, Hatten Wines, produces rosé and sparkling wines from Isabella.
