Iowa

The federal state with the capital Des Moines is part of the Midwest of the USA with Arkansas and Missouri. From the year 1788, the country was settled by the first white people. At the beginning of the 19th century, wine growing here was influenced by immigrants from Germany and Switzerland. A special feature are the Amana, a German revivalist movement, which found their way to Iowa around 1843. Until 1932 the community, which lived in several villages (colonies), did not know private property. Even today the Amana villages represent an independent culture, which is still strongly German influenced. Not least because of this there is the oldest brewery in Iowa. The Amana area is also the location of most of the wine-growing businesses. There are about a dozen of them, for example Eagle City Winery, Ehrle Brothers, Summerset Winery and Tabor Home Vineyards and Winery. There are harsh winters with extreme temperature fluctuations, therefore mainly hybrids and varieties of the species Vitis labrusca are cultivated.
