The Republic of Iraq (Arabic جمهورية العراق, Kurdish Komarî Êraq) in the Near East with its capital Baghdad covers 434,128 km². It borders Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Jordan to the south, Syria to the west, Turkey to the north and Iran and the Persian Gulf to the east. The north of the country forms the autonomous region of Kurdistan with its own parliament. Today's Iraq was created in 1920 from the three Ottoman provinces of Baghdad, Mosul and Basra. The Kingdom of Iraq existed from 1921 to 1958. In 1958, the king was overthrown in a military coup and a republic was proclaimed. From 1979 to 2003, the country was ruled by the dictator Saddam Hussein. This regime was overthrown under the leadership of the USA.

Irak - Landkarte, Flagge, Wappen

Iraq comprises most of Mesopotamia, the "land of Mesopotamia" between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, where the earliest advanced civilisations developed in ancient times and is considered one of the cradles of wine culture. According to the latest research, the origins of viticulture could also lie in the neighbouring Turkish south-eastern Anatolia to the north (arrow). Today's capital Baghdad was a centre of the wine trade at the time. Due to the Islamic ban on alcohol, only sultanas and table grapes are produced. In 2022, the area under vines totalled 6,309 hectares; it can be assumed that no wine is produced.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
