The winery is located in the municipality of Sotillo de la Ribera near the city of Burgos in the Spanish region of Castilla y León. The winery was founded in its current form in 1979. However, the Arroyo family, rich in tradition, has been growing grapes for 400 years. The vineyards cover 25 hectares of clayey, gravelly soils in the DO area of Ribera del Duero, planted with the red wine variety Tinta del País (Tempranillo variety) and the white wine variety Albillo. Some of the vines are very old (80 years and older). The manual grape harvest takes place very late, at the beginning of October, to ensure optimal ripeness. The wines are matured in a wine cellar dating back to the 16th century. The simpler qualities are marketed under the name "Mesoneros de Castilla", the top wines under "Valsotillo".

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
