Abbreviation for "Institute of Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin" (Institute for Science of Vine and Wine), the largest wine research center in the world. This was founded in Bordeaux in 2007 and consists of 15 institutes that were previously spread across the four universities of Bordeaux and other research centers. 21 million euros were invested in the center, which spans over 9,000 square meters, some of which comes from EU funds. Around 400 students are to be trained as Diplôme National d'Oenologue (DNO = graduate oenologist) each year. Over a hundred scientists conduct applied and basic research. The main research areas range from improving breeding practice to developing the cultural aspects of wine. Another important teaching address in France is the viticulture department of the "École Nationale Supérieur Agronomique" as a branch of the university in Montpellier, See also under Wine-producing institutions,
