Jampal

The white grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Boal Rosado, Cercial, Jampaulo, João Paolo and Pinheira Branca. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is probably a natural cross between Alfrocheiro x Cayetana Blanca. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular Genetics). It should not be confused with its numerous sibling varieties (see Cayetana Blanca). A somatic mutation with pink berries is the variety Camarate Vermelho. This medium to late ripening, somewhat low-yielding vine is susceptible to fungal diseases such as botrytis and powdery mildew and also tends to coulure. It produces aromatic, alcohol-rich and full-bodied white wines with good quality potential. The variety is grown in the areas of Colares, Lisboa and Setúbal in the central west of the country. The area under cultivation in 2016 was 34 hectares (Kym Anderson statistics).
