The winery is located in the municipality of Johannisberg in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau. Viticulture has been practised by the family since 1685, and today the estate is run by Johannes and Sabine Eser, the tenth generation. The origin of the huge cellar, which lies ten metres under the mountain, dates back to 1790. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vines in the Kläuserweg (Geisenheim), Goldatzel, Hölle, Klaus, Schwarzenstein and Vogelsang (Johannisberg), Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland and Kirchenpfad (Rüdesheim), and Hasensprung and Jesuitengarten (Winkel) sites. They are 99% planted with Riesling and some Pinot Blanc. The majority of the wines are vinified separately by site in steel tanks and then mature in traditional wooden barrels. In addition to quality wines, high quality wines such as Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein are also produced. Fine brandies (Weinbrand) and bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP.
