Jois

The wine-growing community in the Austrian state Burgenland is located 130 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Leitha Mountains six kilometers west of Lake Neusiedl. It was first mentioned in documents in 1217 as "Gyois". The Hungarian Queen Maria (1505-1558) granted the place (next to Neusiedl on the lake and Rust ) the right to mark their wine barrels for the excellent quality with the initial letter "G" (for Geusz). The vineyards of the municipality Jois used to all belong to the wine-growing area Lake Neusiedl, In 2016, a restructuring took place in which the former wine-growing region Neusiedlersee-Hügelland abandoned and (not congruent) by the DAC area Leithaberg was replaced. This includes the approximately 560 hectares of vineyards from Jois. In 1989, a wine trail was created by the best vineyards. Well-known wineries are Hillinger. Pasler Martin. Scheiblhofer. Castle Halbturn and Umathum,
