Jois

The wine-growing community in the Austrian province of Burgenland is located 130 metres above sea level on the slopes of the Leithagebirge mountains six kilometres west of Lake Neusiedl. It was first mentioned in documents in 1217 as "Gyois". The Hungarian Queen Maria (1505-1558) granted the village (along with Neusiedl am See and Rust) the right to label its wine barrels with the initial letter "G" (for Geusz) due to the excellent quality. The letter also appears in the coat of arms with three "Joiser Herzkirschen", a speciality of the village. The Jois vineyards Jois used to belong to the Neusiedlersee wine-growing region. In 2016, a restructuring took place in which the former wine-growing area Neusiedlersee hill country was abandoned and replaced (not congruent) by the newly created wine-growing area Leithaberg. This now includes the 560 hectares of vineyards from Jois. In 1989 a wine nature trail was created through the best vineyards. Well-known vineyards are Hillinger, Pasler Martin, Scheiblhofer, Schloss Halbturn and Umathum.
