It was first mentioned in a document in 1217 as "Gyois". The Hungarian Queen Maria (1505-1558) granted the place (next to Neusiedl am See and Rust ) the right to mark their wine barrels with the first letter "G" (for Geusz) due to their excellent quality. The vineyards of the municipality of Jois used to belong to the wine region Lake Neusiedl, In 2016, the former Neusiedlersee-Hügelland wine region was abandoned and (not congruently) by the DAC division Leithaberg was replaced. This now includes the approximately 560 hectares of vineyards from Jois. In 1989 a wine educational trail was created through the best vineyards. Well-known wineries are Hillinger. Pasler Martin. Scheiblhofer. Halbturn Castle and Umathum,
