Jullien André

The wine merchant and writer André Jullien (1766-1832) from Paris was one of the first wine authors to undertake extensive travels in all five continents, even as far as China and Africa. He set himself the goal of describing all the wines of the world as far as possible and to classify them according to style and quality. In 1816 he published the work "Topographie de tous les vignobles connus", of which an abridged English version appeared eight years later under the title "A manual and guide to all importers and purchasers in the choice of wines". It is considered the most comprehensive wine classification of all time. Jullien ranked in five quality classes. The wines from the Château Haut-Brion, Château Lafite, Château Latour and Château Margaux wineries, for example, he classified as "first class" and thus probably had a significant influence on the Bordeaux classification introduced a little later in 1855. André Jullien is considered one of the most important founders of modern wine journalism and professional wine evaluation.
