Jumilla

The DO, named after the city of the same name, is located in the Spanish region of Murcia Levant, With 41,300 hectares of vineyards, Jumilla is one of the largest DO areas. The vineyards are located at 400 to 800 meters above sea level. Because of the sandy soils with limestone as parent rock, this area was spared from phylloxera in the 19th century. Mainly red wines from the main grape variety Monastrell (85% of the vineyard area), Cencibel (Tempranillo), Garnacha (Grenache), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are produced. The white wines are made from Airén, Macabeo and Merseguera. Naturally sweet wines from overripe grapes by Pedro Ximénez or Monastrell are also traditionally produced. In part, the technology also becomes Doble pasta applied.
