The winery is located in the municipality of Thörnich (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. A wine tavern is attached. The family business is run by Karl-Jürgen and Cornelia Thul. The vineyards cover nine hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Ritsch (Thörnich), Bruderschaft (Klüsserath) and Maximiner Klosterlay (Detzem). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (two-thirds of the area with vines that are partly ungrafted over 70 years old), Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Regent and Dornfelder.
Particular attention is paid to vineyard care, which is carried out in a natural, environmentally friendly manner. This includes pruning in spring, extensive foliage and soil care during the entire vegetation cycle, cover crop of the vine alleys and plant protection measures reduced to the bare minimum. Only ripe and healthy grapes are harvested by hand late in the season.
The cellar work is carried out as gently as possible by using gravity. Depending on quality and origin, the wines are produced in three categories: basic wines, estate wines "Schieferklang" from stony soils and site wines from the best plots. Depending on the type of wine, they are matured in steel tanks, large wooden bar rels or in barriques. Sparkling wines, bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble brandies are also produced.
The wein.plus encyclopaedia is a comprehensive, well-researched reference work. Available anytime and anywhere, it has become an indispensable part of teaching, used by students and myself alike. Highly recommended!
