Käferberg (Riede Austria)

Vineyard or site in the municipality of Langenlois in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Kamptal; the name goes back to an owner's name or to a particularly large number of beetles on the mountain. The vineyards, which face east-south-east and are protected by wine laws, cover 29 hectares of vineyards with a slope of 0 to 10° at an altitude of 304 to 364 metres above sea level. The soils consist of primary rock (Gföhler gneiss with mica schist) with partial loess layers.

The airy location enables a late harvest of fully ripe grapes without botrytis. Since 2005, a seven-metre-high sculpture made of 130 iron balls in the shape of a bunch of grapes has stood here, created by artist Heimo Zobernig (the orange-coloured structure in the centre of the picture). Mainly Grüner Veltliner, as well as smaller quantities of Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc are grown here. The Bründlmayer Willi, Grillmaier, Jurtschitsch, Loimer Fred, Rabl Rudolf and Summerer wineries, for example, have shares in the vineyard.

Other vineyards with this designation can also be found in the municipalities of Altenlichtwarth (Weinviertel, Lower Austria), Eltendorf (Eisenberg, Burgenland) and Hochleiten (Weinviertel, Lower Austria).
