The winery is located in the municipality of Zell-Merl (Burg Cochem area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. The family has been growing grapes since 1540, i.e. for well over 500 years. In its current structure, the farm is run by the third generation. Since 1972, it has been managed by Albert Kallfelz. At that time, the vineyards covered only 1.8 hectares. In 2000, the farm buildings were enlarged. Today, over 43 hectares are cultivated in the Adler, Fettgarten, Königslay (almost solely owned) and Stephansberg (Merl) vineyards. Two thirds of these are on steep slopes. Mainly Riesling is cultivated, as well as smaller quantities of Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau. In addition, grapes are purchased from contract winegrowers. Integrated viticulture is consistently practised in harmony with nature. The wines are vinified and marketed in the three lines Schoppenweine, Gutsweine (from the best sites) and Selection (from the Grand Cru sites). The wines are 85% dry. Natural corks are not used; the bottles are sealed with high-quality plastic corks. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
