Karst Ernst

The winery "Ernst Karst & Sohn" is located in the municipality of Bad Dürkheim (Mittelhaart/Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. The traditional winery has been family-owned since 1765. A guesthouse is attached. It is run by Erika Karst, the winery by Manfred Karst. After basic studies in biology and specialised training as a viticultural engineer, son Uli is responsible for the cellar. The vineyards cover 11.5 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Hochbenn, Nonnengarten, Rittergarten and Spielberg (Bad Dürkheim), as well as Königswingert and Mandelgarten (Wachenheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (40% of the area), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, St. Laurent, Lemberger, Dunkelfelder, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are vinified in the newly built wine press house with gentle pressing technology and completely temperature-controlled fermentation of the musts. The white wines are fermented and matured in steel tanks. The red wines mature in large wooden barrels or in barriques after mash fermentation. In years with suitable weather conditions, ice wines are also produced.
