Japanese term for a vessel for serving or pouring sake (rice wine) with a spout (beak). It is made of different materials such as ceramics, glass or metal and forms. Katakuchi is mainly used for cold (not warmed) sake. Katakuchi is not ideal for warm sake because the relatively large container cools down too quickly. Other pouring vessels are Chirori (made of tin or copper) and Tokkuri (made of glass or porcelain). Sake is drunk from various drinking vessels such as Masu (wooden cube), Ochoko (cup) and Sakazuki (drinking bowl). See also under wine vessels.
