The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Gyftokoritho, Gyphtokoritho, Kaltsakouli, Kaltzakouli, Kartsakouli, Katsacoul, Katskouli, Katsacoulias and Katsakoulia. The parentage (parentage) is unknown. The medium to late ripening, high-yielding vine is sensitive to drought. It produces red wines with high acidity. The variety is mainly cultivated on the island of Zakynthos and in small quantities on Peloponnese and is blended with the varieties Avgoustiatis and Skylopnichtis to produce red and rosé wines. A white-berry variety is said to exist on the island of Euboea in central Greece (Pierre Galet). However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (statistics Kym Anderson).
