The Austrian champagne house based in the Austrian capital Wien was founded in 1857 by Johann Kattus I (1823-1899) in the 1st district of Am Hof as a trading house. Initially, wine, coffee, tea, tropical fruits, spirits and champagne, later also sold caviar. A little later, Kattus founds a factory on the Caspian Sea in Astrakhan (today Russia ). He supplies the sovereigns in Wien and St. Petersburg with the so-called “black gold”. Kattus also established contacts with the famous champagne house very early on Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin in Reims, this business relationship continues to this day.
The own production of sparkling wine was taken in 1890 by the son of the founder Johann Nepomuk Kattus II. (1867-1933). This also created the brand Hochriegl which he named after his best vineyard. In 1898, Kattus was appointed kuk court supplier to the Habsburg rulers. After the First World War the company was founded by the three brothers Johann III. (1904-1972), Josef and Franz in the third generation. Johann Kattus was also a great lover of wine and acquired top vineyards Nußberg near Wien . Today Kattus is managed by Mag. Maria Polsterer-Kattus and her husband Dr. Ernst Polsterer-Kattus in the fourth generation. In October 2007, the 150th company anniversary was celebrated.
In autumn 2009 the Hochriegl brand and its production machines were launched Schlumberger sold. In the future, Kattus wants to concentrate more on the manufacture and distribution of the Kattus brand and its new product line.
