History

Evidence of grape cultivation dates back to the 7th century BC. Grapes were cultivated on a larger scale from the 1930s onwards. At this time, numerous fruit and wine-growing collective farms were established in the south and south-east of the country on the border with China in the areas of Almaty, Qysylorda and Shambyl.

Viticulture today

Only just under 4% of Kazakhstan's huge land area offers favourable climatic and soil conditions for viticulture. The continental climate is characterised by very cold winters and low rainfall. For this reason, most of the vineyards have to be irrigated artificially using water from the Syr-Darya and Ili rivers. In 2021, the vineyards covered 13,573 hectares of vines and the wine production volume was 233,00 hectolitres. Specialities are fortified dessert wines and sparkling wines. The former capital Almaty (Alma-Ata) is the centre of sparkling wine production. The grape variety index (Kym Anderson):
