The winery is located in the municipality of Mangualde in the DOC area dão
in the Portuguese region Beiras
, The origin goes back to the "Quinta do Cruzeiro" founded in 1890, but the family has been involved in wine-growing for over 400 years. Up until the middle of the 20th century, the company was continuously expanded and rebuilt and invested in the modernization of the production facilities. In 2003, lawyer Julia Melo Kemper decided to revive the family's historic vineyards. With the support of well-known oenologists from the company Vines & Wines (Ing. João Paulo Gouveia), these were completely newly cultivated after extensive soil analyzes with regard to the optimal grape varieties or documents and composting of the vineyards. This process took four years until the first harvest could take place in 2007. The total property covers 55 hectares of land. 15 hectares are planted with the red varieties Alfrocheiro Preto, Jaén du Dão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) and Touriga Nacional, as well as with the white varieties Encruzado, Malvasia Fina and Verdelho. There is an artificial one irrigation
(Drip irrigation). The management or vinification is carried out strictly according to organic, certified guidelines. The red wines and white wines are called DOC dão
produced. There are friendly relationships with the Port Wine House Niepoort
, which helps with the marketing of the wines.
