The presidential Republic of Kenya on the east coast of Africa with the capital Nairobi covers 580,367 km². It borders South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the north-east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west and the Indian Ocean to the south-east. Kenya gained independence from Great Britain in 1963.

Viticulture

Small-scale viticulture has been practised here since the early 1980s. The vineyards are located on Lake Naivasha at 2,000 metres above sea level on the volcanic soil of Mount Longonot (near Nairobi). The white wine varieties Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc and the red wine varieties Carnelian and Ruby Cabernet are cultivated. A grape harvest is possible every eight months, resulting in three harvests in two years. The most important producer is Lake Naivasha Vineyards, which was founded by the Irish-born pioneers John and Guy d'Olier.
