The white grape variety originates from Georgia. Synonyms are Chichvi, Djananura, Janaani, Jananura, Khichvi and Khikchvi. The parentage is unknown. Together with other Georgian varieties, its origin is said to date back to the 5th century. The medium-ripening vine has sugar-rich berries and is susceptible to powdery mildew. It produces acidic white wines with a floral aroma. The variety is cultivated in the Kakheti region and is also used for the wines traditionally produced here in clay jugs (kvevri). In 2016, only six hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson). Small stocks are also said to exist in Moldova and Ukraine.
