The red grape variety is an interspecific cross between Wild vines of the species Vitis riparia x Vitis labrusca, Synonyms are Blue Kilian and Kilian the name was probably after the wine saint Kilian forgive. The hybrid came from Erfurt (Thuringia) to the Palatinate, where it was spread around the city of Speyer in 1883 by the eponymous farmer or gardener Kilian Vonderschmitt (in other sources Vonderschmied). The vine is resistant to the phylloxera and both mildews, It produces simple, acidic wines that are popularly known pug or called rambas. In the 1930s, under National Socialist rule, instructions were given to exterminate the vine, but some vines have been preserved around Dudenhofen. From this wine is still made today for personal consumption. The community decided in 2005 to preserve the variety as a cultural asset.
