The red grape variety is an interspecific cross between Wild vines of the species Vitis riparia x Vitis labrusca, Synonyms are Blue Kilianer and Kilianer's name was probably after the wine saint Kilian forgive. The hybrid reached from Erfurt (Thuringia) in the Palatinate, where it was distributed in 1883 by the eponymous farmer or gardener Kilian Vonderschmitt (in other sources Vonderschmied) to the city of Speyer. The vine is resistant to the phylloxera and both mildews, It produces simple, acid-stressed wines, popularly pug or Rambas. In the 1930s, the order was given to eradicate the vine under the National Socialist rule, but some vines have been preserved around Dudenhofen. From this wine is still being pressed for self-consumption today. The municipality decided in 2005 to preserve the variety as a cultural asset.
