The estate is located in the municipality of Appenheim (area Bingen ) in the German region Rheinhessen. The traditional family has been involved in viticulture since the end of the 19th century. The grandparents Erwin and Magdalena Knewitz laid the foundation stone for the relocation to the current location. Wine was bottled for the first time in 1976 under the direction of Gerold Knewitz. After studying enology in Geisenheim and a few practical stays, the company has been managed by Tobias Knewitz in the third family generation since 2009 with the focus on natural viticulture. He is supported by his partner Corina Knorr and brother Björn. The saying, coined by the French writer Colette (1873-1954), is the house's motto: Only wine allows people to understand the taste of the earth.
The vineyards cover 25 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers donkey path and Hundred guilders (Appenheim), Goldberg and St. Laurenzikapelle (Gau-Algesheim), Steinacker (Nieder-Hilbersheim) and Schlossberg (Ingelheim). Despite all the differences and individuality of the layers, the high lime content in common makes them ideal for the leading Riesling variety. The fermentation takes place spontaneous with grape yeasts. Depending on the type of wine, the wines in the Stainless steel tank, in the traditional large wooden barrel or in Barrique fermented and expanded. They are marketed in the lines of estate wines (entry-level wines), local wines (local and terroir character) and site wines (from old vines in the core of the top locations). The premium wines are Riesling Hundertgulden and Chardonny Réserve. A bottle-fermented sparkling wine is also produced. Around 150,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of the association Maxime Ursprung Rheinhessen.
