Kögl

The vineyard (Lage) is located on the Kreuzberg in the area of the city of Krems in the Austrian wine-growing region of Kremstal (however, it should not be confused with the vineyard Kogl, which is located on the other bank of the Danube and is also called Hollenburger Kogl after the Krems district of Hollenburg). The name is derived from the Latin "Cuculla" (monk's hood) after the shape of the hill. The south-facing, terraced vineyards with slopes of up to 50% cover 20 hectares of vineyards. They consist of poor soils with crystalline slate with a thin, chalky loess layer. They are very well suited to Riesling, most of which is grown here. There are also small stands of Neuburger. To the east of this is the well-known Wachtberg vineyard, which was already mentioned in 1137 as "Wartberg". The varieties Grüner Veltliner, Müller-Thurgau, Traminer and Frühroter Veltliner are cultivated here. From both vineyards one can enjoy a beautiful view of the city of Krems. The Müllner Johann, Salomon Undhof and Stagård wineries, for example, have shares in the vineyard.
