The winery in the municipality of Kallstadt in the German wine-growing region palatinate was founded by the Ruprecht family around 1700. Due to female succession, the names Ruprecht and later Koehler were lost. In 1969 the estate was taken over by Otto Philippi. The current owner Bernd Philippi worked as a wine consultant internationally for many years before taking over the business from his father in 1986. The hotel "Weincastell" is connected. Together with Werner Näkel (owner of the winery Meyer Näkel an der Ahr) and Bernhard Breuer (owner of the Georg winery Breuer in the Rheingau), with whom he had previously worked on several projects, the winery "Quinta da Carvalhosa" was founded in the Portuguese Douro Valley in 2000. The vineyards in the Palatinate encompass 12.5 hectares of vineyards in the single town of Kronenberg, pig's stomach and Steinacker. Most of them are planted with the varieties Riesling and Pinot Noir, as well as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Dornfelder, Gewürztraminer, Rieslaner, Cabernet Sauvignon, Scheurebe and Kerner.

Without exception, the wines ferment in wooden barrels - partly in traditional quarter, half and piece barrels, partly in barriques - using natural yeasts. The small containers in combination with the sharp must clarification and the sluggish natural yeasts make them very slow spontaneous fermentation which can drag up to nine months from the hem of the top Rieslings. After fermentation, the wines mature for a long time on the lees, This traditional expansion leads to long-lasting wines, which only become apparent after a few years in the bottle. The Pinot Noir is aged in barriques. Noble sweet wines such as the "Elysium" are also produced. The winery is a member of VDP (Association of German quality wine estates).
