Koehler-Ruprecht

The winery in the municipality of Kallstadt in the German wine-growing region palatinate was founded around 1700 by the Ruprecht family. Due to female succession the names Ruprecht and later also Koehler were lost. In 1969, the estate was taken over by Otto Philippi. Today's owner Bernd Philippi worked internationally as a wine consultant for many years, before he took over the business in 1986 from his father. Connected is the hotel "Weincastell". Together with Werner Näkel (owner of the winery Meyer Näkel on the Ahr) and Bernhard Breuer (owner of the winery Georg Breuer in the Rheingau), with whom he had previously worked together in some projects, the winery "Quinta da Carvalhosa" was founded in 2000 in the Portuguese Douro Valley. The vineyards in the Palatinate cover 12.5 hectares of vineyards in the Kallstadt single layers Kronenberg, pig's stomach and Steinacker. They are planted for the most part with the varieties Riesling and Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Dornfelder, Gewürztraminer, Rieslaner, Cabernet Sauvignon, Scheurebe and Kerner.

Without exception, the wines ferment in oak barrels - sometimes in traditional quarter- and half-barrels, partly in barrique - using the natural yeasts. The small containers, in conjunction with the sharp Mostvorklärung and the slower natural yeasts cause a very slow spontaneous fermentation, which can last up to nine months with the top Rieslings from the Saumagen. After fermentation, the wines ripen longer on the lees, This traditional expansion leads to long-lasting wines, which only reveal themselves after several years of bottle aging. The Spätburgunder are matured in oak barrels. There are also sweet wines such as the "Elysium" produced. The winery is a member of VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
