Kollmütz

Riede (site) in the municipality of Wösendorf in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Wachau. It should not be confused with the Kollmitz vineyard in neighbouring Joching. It was first mentioned in 1151 as "Cholmunz". The vineyards are arranged all around the mountain slopes. The vineyards are laid out in terraces supported by dry stone walls and cover 42 hectares. They are situated between 221 and 418 metres above sea level and have a slope gradient of up to 74%. At the foot of the slope, the soils are loess. On the slope, the sandy-stony, somewhat calcareous soils are particularly rich in iron, manganese and magnesium. Due to the deep weathering, the roots of the vines can penetrate metres deep into the rock. The wineries Bruch Richard, Machherndl, Pichler Franz, Pichler Rudi and Schwaiger, for example, have shares in the vineyard.
