Kracher Weinlaubenhof

The Kracher family's “Weinlaubenhof” in the municipality of Illmitz is located in the Burgenland wine-growing region Lake Neusiedl (Austria). Alois "Luis" Kracher (1959-2007), who died young, was considered a pioneer of quality-oriented Austrian viticulture and clearly the most internationally renowned Austrian wine maker. In the annual "Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide" by Robert M. Parker he was the only Austrian represented for many years. Kracher was the best for quite a few experts Süßweinerzeuger of the world. At the latter event, Kracher was named “Winemaker of the Year” a total of five times (1994, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001). That is why he received the coveted trophy from the IWC (outstanding performance over five years). In honor of him, the "Sweet Wine Trophy" was renamed "Alois Kracher Trophy" in 2008. The foundation stone for this is Alois Kracher sen. (1929-2010) who recognized the potential of the Seewinkel for quality winegrowing. He took care of the vineyards until the end, knew every vine and the requirements of each plot. The absolute specialty of the house are noble sweet quality wines like Beerenauslese. Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein found on wine lists from thousands of top restaurants around the world. These make up about 80% of production. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vineyards. They are 85% stocked with the white varieties Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Traminer, Scheurebe, Muskat-Ottonel and experimental plants, and 15% with the red varieties Zweigelt and experimental plants (stocked. The sweet wines are sorted according to the vintage and / or as a cuvée, this is a little different every year, with strict selection of the grapes with up to eight individual grapes.

They are created in two lines. Reductive wines with a regional character and rather subtle botrytis are produced under the name "Between the lakes" (in the broader sense also a location name). They are aged in large wooden barrels from 500 to 3,000 liters and remain in contact with the yeast for a long time. This results in fresh, fruity wines with primary grape aromas. The wines of the second line "Nouvelle Vague" are aged in French barriques with air exchange and correspond to wines of international style with spice and sustainability.

Around 100,000 bottles of wine are produced annually, a large part of which is exported. There are a number of innovative joint ventures with friendly producers. Together with Alfred Berger and Renato Zapella, “The Vienna Wine Orchestra” produces red wines from purchased grapes. With the California winemaker Manfred Krankl sweet wines are produced in California under the name “Mr. K ”is generated. Together with Herbert Schmid from the Viennese four-hood restaurant “Steirereck”, the blue cheese “Kracher Grand Cru” matured with a berry selection was developed, which is produced by Schärdinger.
